From the book to the streets
Project overview
Designing a book, front to back, including typesetting text pages in using a rigorously consistent framework. Presenting the content of the book in an appropriate format.
Challenge
Assessing the best way to present the images alongside body text and figures, required following predetermined rules. However is ultimately about understanding when compromising those rules is needed.
Action
Understanding how to finding the right page size, typeface, typesize, grid, margin size, paragraph styles, character styles, glyph alternatives, chapter openings, figure placement, footnote handing and a whole lot more, for this specific collection of content. Was the crux of this project. Requiring a critically high level of detail that is quietly expressive, as the book design aims to be invisible, a mere platform for the reader to engage with the content itself.
Insight
Learning how to bind a book was so fun, thanks to youtube tutorials. I was able to french-link stich my entire book – giving it a durable binding solution that allows the book to open flat, prioritising the user experience of the reader. As it is a large book and more likely to be read on a table and not handled like more traditional and smaller books.
