Project overview
Different by design (DbD) is an annual zine (short form magazine) which the Typography and Graphic Communication department publishes every year. Each year a team of students is selected to run the project and create that years edition. I was chosen to lead this years edition, supported by three other students.
Challenge
DbD aims to highlight inclusivity in the creativity industry, platforming marginalised voices – giving space for their frustrations to be heard by the university as a whole.
Action
To include the widest range of voices possible we created a survey for students to share their experiences anonymously. In this spirit we expanded on previous years by designing a packet of four zines which cover different themes of the survey. All featuring a unique visual style – each taking on a colour from the CMYK print palette. Accentuated by a individual folding technique. Creating an interactive and engaging reading experience.
Insight
I learned a lot from managing the balance between each zine feeling unique white all feeling apart of the same set. Consistent-cohesive elements, brand identity and the CMYK colour palette really helped tie the zines together while linking it back to design.
